So, summer is coming to an end, the conversations about when is too early to put the heating on have begun! But, today felt like the last hurrah, wintering in Edinburgh, we are expecting cold, snow, wind and rain. Autumn (or fall, for our American friends) has officially begun, but the lovely weather today encouraged us out of our flat and off for an exploring adventure.
We headed to Cramond Island, a tidal island in the Firth of Forth, off the coast of Edinburgh. Having checked the tide times with the coastguard (text CRAMOND to 81400) we headed to the beach for our 4 hour window when we would be able to get there and back. The causeway is only a mile across, so easily done in this time. There is something quite exciting about walking on a path that you know was underwater an hour or so before. However, that does make it rather slippy, I almost fell in the water at one point, probably my own fault for wearing flip flops! On reaching the island, there are paths to investigate, leading to several abandoned, and heavily graffitied buildings. Having been fortified in World War 2, the military presence can felt when looking at the huge concrete walls and metal doors that are still on display.
The island is a great place for a picnic (sadly, we didn’t plan that far ahead), there are beaches full of shells, creepy abandoned buildings to explore and a free car park at the mainland end of the causeway! Edinburgh is a fab city, but if you want to get away from it for a day (or just an afternoon) then head west, head to Cramond Island.
